MIDNIGHT SUN FILM FESTIVAL (61′)

FESTIVAL VISIT

A legendary affair, some 120 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, Midnight Sun FF was founded in 1986 by the directors Aki and Mika Kaurismäki among other free spirits of Finnish cinema. In over thirty years of existence the stories of the faraway festival have reached mythical levels but one thing is for sure it certainly boasts one of the most unique atmospheres: celebrateddirectors, up-and-coming talent, and common people come together during the magical period of northern midnight sun to immerse in cinema. Without any formal restraints, the festival is best characterised by its pure love for the art of filmmaking.

THE LIAR

Streets of Helsinki, in early 80’s, young drifter Ville Alfa (Aki Kaurismäki) goes around trying to borrow money from oddball friend and strangers, by means of quirky and snappy quasi-intellectual line and fabricated excuses. A rarely seen gem, an overnight sensation, a cult classic, that marked the beginning of Kaurismäki brothers’ cinema.
